National Alliance on Mental Illness Annual Conference

October 24, 2018

“Building a Solid Foundation for Life”

Dr. Brian C. Miller, Keynote Speaker. “Stronger in the Broken Places: Foundations of Wellness
“Whether you are experiencing a serious mental illness, or are a family member of someone who is; the foundation of wellness is realizing that it is possible even with symptoms, even with problems, even with an uncertain course. Everyone, as Hemingway said, is broken. But some of us get stronger in the broken places. This presentation will focus on what we know about the foundations for living well with a serious mental illness. Everything changes when we realize that what makes a life of wellness for a person with a mental illness is no different than what makes anyone’s life whole. The key is to avoid becoming hypnotized into focusing exclusively on the illness. And isn’t that what recovery is all about?”
