SUMMARY:National Alliance on Mental Illness Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:“Building a Solid Foundation for Life”\n\nDr. Brian C. Miller\, Keynote Speaker. “Stronger in the Broken Places: Foundations of Wellness\n“Whether you are experiencing a serious mental illness\, or are a family member of someone who is; the foundation of wellness is realizing that it is possible even with symptoms\, even with problems\, even with an uncertain course. Everyone\, as Hemingway said\, is broken. But some of us get stronger in the broken places. This presentation will focus on what we know about the foundations for living well with a serious mental illness. Everything changes when we realize that what makes a life of wellness for a person with a mental illness is no different than what makes anyone’s life whole. The key is to avoid becoming hypnotized into focusing exclusively on the illness. And isn’t that what recovery is all about?” \nFor more details\, visit https://www.namiut.org/news-and-events/nami-utah-state-conference.

SUMMARY:Building Blocks for Sensory Integration - San Diego
DESCRIPTION:Join Sheila M. Frick\, OTR/L in this interactive workshop as she presents a comprehensive understanding of reflex integration and provides insight into the sensorimotor foundations that goes beyond activity programs. Through a combination of lecture and movement labs\, this course will outline how the primary movement patterns (reflexes) serve as a template for neurodevelopmental integration\, but also how to apply this information as a guide for more precise sensory and motor strategies to ultimately support functional outcomes. \nClick here to download the brochure. \n \nBuilding Blocks for Sensory Integration – San Diego

SUMMARY:A Clinicians Guide to Reducing Falls: Evidence-Based Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Click here to download the course brochure for more details.\nWhy Attend?\nOne third of all people over 65 living in the community fall each year.  This number increases to 50% in in-patient settings and skilled nursing facilities.  Fall-related injures leading to death\, hospitalization\, or treatment exceeds $111 billion annually.  Can clinicians provide treatment and education to clients to reduce to the risk of falls in the home\, community\, and clinical settings?  What research supports the role of therapy in fall reduction and what is their scope? How is the rise in genomic hypovitaminosis\, depression\, fear\, medication dosage\, and upper extremity weakness correlated to increased fall rates?  What are the latest hands-on and evidence based techniques and assessments that lead to fall reduction?    Are there fall reduction “programs” that are verified by research and if so what are they?  This intensive lab-based course will answer these questions and discuss the most advanced and reviewed strategies.  Demonstrations and labs will occur to ensure application of the material and immediate carry-over to the clinical setting.  This course will also discuss documentation techniques and examples to strongly justify the need for skilled services with this population in hospital\, in-patient\, acute\, home health\, and outpatient settings. \nObjectives:\n\nIdentify the major contributors to falls and the most common environments where falls occur for the adult and geriatric population.\nIdentify the role of clinicians in fall prevention in various rehab settings\, the home\, and the community at large.\nIdentify the common principles in a fall reduction program leading to evidenced outcomes\nDevelop a practical understanding of learned exercises\, activities\, and a assessments during labs to ensure immediate carry-over into all clinical settings\nApply documentation strategies and language based on information provided in this course to justify skilled clinical services and reimbursement to all payer sources\n\nInstructional Methods\nWe will discuss the most current research explaining falls\, those at risk for falls\, and the power in fall prevention strategies. Demonstrations and labs will take place to ensure the attendees understand the techniques supported to assist with treating the adult and geriatric population.  In addition\, we will learn accepted language and documentation strategies accepted by payer sources and practice these documentation strategies with real-life examples and case studies. \n\nExploration of current trends\, demographics\, and statistics with high\, medium\, and low risk fall clients\nPhotographs\, videos\,  demonstrations\, and x-ray images will be used to increase participants’ understanding of interventions\nLab (completed by clinicians in small groups/partners)\nDocumentation examples\nCase study review \n\nCEU(s): 6 \nCEU Accreditation from UOTA \nPending Accreditation from UPTA \nRegistration\nPlease register by email: tkbrowno@hotmail.com \nOr text/call: 801-455-5482 \nInclude your name\, number\, email address\, and discipline when registering.  You will receive a confirmation email. \nPayment: Please bring cash or check to the course or pay via PayPal to the email listed above. \nSnacks/Beverages Provided

SUMMARY:Management of Nerve & Tendon Pain in the Upper Extremity
DESCRIPTION:Click here to download the event brochure. \nThis seminar is designed to advance clinical competence in working with the neurological and musculoskeletal issues associated with repetitive stress injuries through the application of current clinical evidence. A thorough review of tendon/nerve physiology\, pathomechanics\, and surgical techniques will create a foundation for proper intervention. This foundation will then be used to develop assessment and treatment approaches to pathology associated with repetitive stress injuries. Course content includes current conservative and surgical treatment options\, ergonomic assessment/intervention\, imaging\, post-surgical guidelines\, splinting options\, joint and soft tissue mobilization\, modalities and specific therapeutic exercise techniques. The student will participate in lecture and small group discussion before implementing assessment and treatment strategies in laboratory sessions. \nThis seminar is designed to advance clinical competence in working with the neurological and musculoskeletal issues associated with repetitive stress injuries through the application of current clinical evidence.
